As a keen homebrewer for nearly a decade now I’ve watched just about all there is to watch when it comes to DIY beer, I’ve also been to my fair share of beerfests, beer halls and the odd wine tasting. Like most things in life the more you put into it the more you get out, this also goes for homebrewing. Knowledge of the craft is essential if you want to brew the best beer you can. So, in this article I am going to go through a short list of some of my favourite books on homebrewing:

The Homebrewers Companion by Charlie Papazian

Published in 2003, this 464-page book covers everything from malt to hops and everything in-between. It has a wealth of knowledge in the form of charts, statistics and dozens of recipes you can try at home. The books author Charlie Papazian is himself a brewer as well as the founder of the Association of Brewers and The Great American Beer Festival.

IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and The Evolution of The India Pale Ale

If you love IPA’s, making IPA’s or just juicy dank beer, this is must-read. Jam-packed with brewing tips and tricks as well as 48 clone recipes that vary from such well-known breweries as Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Russian River Brewing Company just to name a few. Mitch Steele is a former head brewer at Stone Brewing Co. and currently at New Realm Brewing Co. where he is the Brewmaster and COO.

The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian

Now into its fourth edition, the complete joy of homebrewing published in 2014 is the reference that any person interested in brewing ales, lagers, and meads must have. Charlie Papazian will walk you through each step of the journey while pointing out the sights, sounds, scents, and tastes you may expect to experience. Every chapter, which is obviously written with comedy and wit and is completely without pretense, makes it clear that the author loves brewing.

The Big Book of Clone Recipes by Brew Your Own

With over 300 clone recipes of some of the most famous craft beer in the world, The Big Book of Clone Recipes is an essential addition in any All-Grain brewers repertoire. It includes clones in every category of beer, a few of which are on my bucket list to try, namely the 90 min IPA clone by Dogfish Head and the Curieux Belgian Tripel Clone from Allagash Brewery.
